Replantation of the thumb!

Replantation of the thumb!
This was a 28 year old male that experienced a traumatic complete amputation at the left 1st digit interphalangeal joint while using a wood splitter to cut wood.

Because the amputation was a fairly clean cut and the person is of a young age, this person was a good candiate for replantation. Doctors also made an extra effort to save the digit so that use of the disposable thumb may be returned.

Due to the location of the amputation, the joint was not salvagable and the joint was fused in a functional position during replantation. Pins were placed vertically through the digit to support the joint during healing.

Nearly 8 months post reattachment, the person has normal nerve sensation and 80-90% function.
